Creative Ways to Celebrate Landmark Birthdays

Here at Hello Ruth HQ, we just love a birthday, and the best ones are always ‘landmark’ birthdays. From 18ths to 100ths there are plenty of opportunities to celebrate in style.

Our favourite family landmark birthday parties had fun themes that were easy for every guest to get involved with. These fun, easy party ideas don’t have to cost a fortune, but create a lot of impact your guests will love.

Mad Hatter’s 40th Birthday Party

When I turned 40 a few years ago, we created a fun Mad Hatter’s Tea Party for our guests. I was the Queen of Hearts, my husband went as the Mad Hatter himself, my daughter made a lovely Alice and my son was a very cute White Rabbit. We made the costumes ourselves and I think they turned out really well, what do you think?

We invited our guests to dress colourfully with hats, and lots of them went to town and made their own, which made the event even more special.

You can’t have a tea party without tea and cake. Ours was served on vintage crockery, which we borrowed or bought from charity shops. We sipped pink champagne from china cups, too. We set up a long table with candelabras, and added a few touches of ‘Alice in Wonderland’ style with oversized clocks, balloons modelled into flamingos, and playing card decorations.

Finally, we had red and white roses, both real, and paper – the real Queen of Hearts would have approved, I’m sure.

As landmark birthday celebrations generally have kids on the invite list, we hired a children’s entertainer, and a brass band made the whole day go with a swing.

Relaxed 70th Summer Garden Party

Another family favourite landmark birthday celebration was my dad’s 70th. We decided on a laid-back summer garden party, which included a three-course meal with canapes for over 30 people.

We borrowed a marquee, hired tables and chairs from the local school, and covered them in rustic fabric. We wanted to create a relaxed, hand-crafted feel, so we decorated the tables with brown paper place mats, decorated with chalk. We made handmade napkin holders tied with ivy.
